One of the most influential people of the 20th century, Che Guevara , was also a great lover of mate .
More popularly known as "Che Guevara" or "Che," Ernesto Guevara is known for being one of the leaders of the Cuban Revolution in the 1960s.
It was while traveling through Latin America that he became aware of the social inequalities that plagued the continent. He decided to go to Cuba at the age of 28. The film"Diarios de Motocicleta" ( Motorcycle Diaries in the original version) tells the story of the beginnings of this journey, undertaken by Ernesto Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado.
He died on October 9, 1967, executed by the Bolivian army while trying to start a revolution in Bolivia.
Although best known for his role in Cuba, Che was not Cuban but Argentine. He was born in Rosario on June 14, 1928, and spent most of his youth in Buenos Aires.
His nickname "Che" comes from his Argentinian pronunciation, the Argentinian accent being distinguished from other Hispanic countries by a very pronounced "ché" for the "y", the "ll" or sometimes the "j".

While mate was Che's favorite drink (like many Argentines ), he was particularly attached to it because his parents owned a yerba mate plantation in the Missiones province of northern Argentina.
Aside: Missiones is one of the main mate producing regions in the world, and today it is possible to visit mate plantations there via the mate route .
