Tereré , a cold mate , is the national drink of Paraguay. It is also popular in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. It is a deliciously refreshing drink, perfect on a hot day and a must-try for any mate lover.

Orange juice is most commonly used for tereré. Lemonade or plain water also work well.
Adding sugar helps sweeten tereré. But unlike traditional mate, tereré is not very bitter. Adding sugar is simply a matter of taste.
It is popular in Paraguay to add fresh herbs to yerba mate.
The most popular are mint and lemongrass, but the choices are endless. You can also add pieces of fruit (strawberry, lemon, orange, etc.).

Although tereré is traditionally prepared in a guampa (a mate gourd made from a horn), it is perfectly possible to prepare it in a simple glass.
It is also possible to use a mate gourd.
However, we recommend not using gourds made of squash, wood, or bamboo, as the fruity taste of tereré may affect the taste of future mate drinks. A stainless steel gourd is therefore preferable.

A large container containing fresh water mixed with the fruits/herbs. It allows the tereré to be re-infused (as for a traditional mate).
