Asked about his astonishing energy after a trip to high altitudes – Bolivia, Paraguay, Ecuador – Pope Francis told journalists: "I have not tried coca , let me be clear (...) Mate is what helps me."
The Pope sipping a mate from the tip of his bombilla... An image that often surprises!
But when you know that mate is found in more than 90% of homes in Argentina (and that the Pope is Argentinian), it's no longer surprising!
A symbol of conviviality and friendship, mate is often shared and drunk in groups. And to the surprise of his audience, the Pope is no exception!
One Wednesday, while traveling in his Popemobile through a Vatican square, he stopped to share a mate with an Argentinian worshipper who called out to him "Tomáte un mate Francisco!" as he passed by (equivalent to "Drink yourself a mate Francisco!").
A moment that was immortalized (in Spanish, obviously):
