Can we drink mate in the evening?

Peut-on boire du maté le soir

If you have ever drunk mate, you have certainly felt a significant boost of energy. But if you have never tried it... Well, let us tell you: mate gives you a lift!

This is partly due to its caffeine content.

Hence the question we are often asked: can one drink mate in the evening?

In a few words

Yes, to a certain extent.

This article explains the influence of mate on sleep and gives you some recommendations to enjoy it without mate preventing you from sleeping.

1. Mate and caffeine

caffeine mate in the evening

A traditionally prepared mate is about 100 mL. And a 100 mL mate contains approximately 36mg of caffeine.

To continue the comparison with coffee (since mate is an excellent alternative to coffee), an espresso (50mL) contains 88mg of caffeine.

  • A mate: 36mg of caffeine
  • An espresso: 88mg of caffeine

One mate is roughly equivalent to half an espresso in terms of caffeine.

And regarding the recommended amount?

The European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, recommends not exceeding 400mg of caffeine per day for a healthy adult (which is equivalent to about ten mates).

2. Insomnia? A matter of sensitivity...

To return to sleep, it is affected by caffeine.

So, mate can prevent sleep.

As much as coffee.

And, as with coffee, the impact of caffeine on sleep largely depends on each person's sensitivity.

To keep it simple

Someone sensitive to coffee will be sensitive to mate.

So, if coffee keeps you awake, there's a good chance that mate will have the same effect. In that case, we advise you to avoid drinking mate in the evening.

Conversely, if you have no problem falling asleep after drinking coffee, mate should not affect your sleep, and you should be able to drink mate in the evening without any issues.

In a few words

Some people can drink mate all day and have no problem falling asleep, while others may not be able to sleep in the evening after having only a small mate at 1 PM.

This brings us to some recommendations.

3. Recommendations: a matter of time and quantity

In order to avoid sleep problems, we recommend that everyone who drinks mate for the first time (or recently) follow two simple tips during the first few days:

  • Do not drink more than 3 or 4 mates in one day.
  • Do not drink mate in the evening or even in the afternoon.

So if you start drinking mate, we recommend following these two recommendations.

You can calmly adjust your consumption afterwards, depending on the effects you feel, and simply, on your cravings for mate!

Following these two little tips will allow you to fully enjoy mate without affecting your sleep.

4. A parenthesis: The difference with coffee

Aside from their difference in caffeine content, coffee and mate are two very similar beverages.

They are consumed throughout the day for their stimulating and energizing properties.

A different energizing effect

In a few words, mate provides energy continuously, for several hours, whereas coffee provides energy in "spikes" followed by the famous "crash".

Mate coffee sleep

The reason for this difference: theobromine

Unlike coffee, mate contains theobromine.

It is a molecule that is mainly found in cocoa, and which, like caffeine, has a stimulating action.

On the other hand, the energizing effect caused by theobromine is different from caffeine, milder.

And it is this theobromine-caffeine mixture that gives mate a different effect from coffee. A more diffuse effect.

It is indeed to this molecule (which, we remind you, is found in cocoa and therefore, in chocolate) that we owe the famous saying:

drink mate in the evening
